The End of the Film

Conversation with Lucia (aged 5) after she had finished watching a film (Dad had watched most of it with her, but had had to go and do something else before it finished):

Dad: "So, Lucia - what happened at the end of the film?"
Lucia: "Well, um, it finished."

Quote from Abigail (aged 7) on being told she couldn't do something immediately:

Mum: "You'll just have to practise patience."

On Turning 40

Another quote - from Joanna (aged 8) the day after my wife's 40th birthday:

Well, I'm not used to you being 40 - it's too old. You have to go back to being 39 again.

And another one from a few days before her birthday - conversation between Mum (aged 39), Abigail (aged 6) and Lucia (aged 5):

Abigail: "You'll be 40 - you'll be as old as Dad!"
Mum: "I can't catch up with him you know."
Lucia: "Yeah, you will. He'll just be older than you when you're the same as him."

Kathleen (aged 10) is complaining to Mum who has told her that she has to do her morning jobs (chores):

Kathleen: "Why do I have to do jobs - no-one else I know has to do them!"

Loving Your Enemies

Another quote from Lucia (aged 3yrs):

Lucia: "Daddy, the Bible says you need to be kind to your enemies."

Dad: "But you're not my enemy, so does that mean that I don't need to be kind to you?"

Lucia (in a very exasperated, reproachful voice): "Daddy... Your children are your enemies... so that means you have to be kind to me!"

Cross about Computers

Another quote from Lucia (aged 3):

Lucia to Dad who is working on something on the computer so can't come and play a game with her: "You're making me cross!"
Dad: "Oh - well then you may need to go to the stairs to think about your attitude for a while because it's not good to get cross about such a little thing."
Lucia: "It's not a little thing - it's a big computer!"

Catching Up With Kids Quotes

Here's some quotes from the kids that we've been noting down over the past couple of months but haven't got round to posting yet...

Me to Sinead: "How long have we been married - 12 years?"
Kathleen (aged 8) pipes up: "It seems longer than 12 years to me"

Kathleen (aged 8): "Reading Milly Molly Mandy is the joy of life."
Mum: "Hmmmm, not sure I've read that in the Bible!?"
Kathleen: "That's because they didn't have Milly Molly Mandy then."

Lucia (aged 3): "I'm a big girl now."
Mum: "Are you? How big?"
Lucia: "Small."

Dad, looking for something: "Does anyone know where..."
...finds it as he is asking and turns towards Lucia (age 3) and continues: "... this is?"
Lucia: "No - I'm not a mother!"

Lucia (aged 3) - out of the blue one morning: "Anyway, it's tomorrow"
Dad, confused: "What's tomorrow?"
Lucia: "Today" - pause - "Is it Daddy? I'm not really sure?"

Still Hungry

Here's another quote from Lucia - she must be going through a growth spurt at the moment - anyone would think we never fed her!

Lucia (aged 2) early one morning before breakfast:

No I'm Not!

While I'm online, I must tell you about what Lucia (aged 2) keeps saying these days. When ever anyone says "you're cute" or "you're a funny-bunny" or "you're ..." (just about anything else) - she always says "No I'm not I'm Lucia!"

No amount of attempted persuasion will convince her to accept that she's anything other than her name!

Saying Sorry

Another quote from the kids this morning:

• Lucia (aged 2) stomping into our room: "Kathleen say 'No! No!'"
• Mum: "Well, did you do something to upset her?"
• Lucia: "Mmm"
• Mum: "Then you need to go to her and say 'Sorry, Kathleen,' and stop it."
• Lucia, walking off, calls out: "Sorry, Kathleen and stop it!"

Hands

Another quote from the kids - this one is from Lucia (aged two) when I asked if someone could pass me something:

"I can pass it to you - I've got some hands!"

Precise Instructions

Sometimes your instructions just need to be a bit clearer...

Mum walks up and finds that someone has given a banana to Lucia (age 2) - the other children have been told that they are not supposed to do that unless they ask first.

Mum: "Who gave Lucia a banana?"
Joanna: "I did."
Mum: "Did you ask a parent?"
Joanna: "Yes, I asked Dad."
Dad (puzzled): "Did you??"
Joanna: "Yes."
Dad (still puzzled): "What did I say?"
Joanna: "Nothing - but you should have!"
